Mike Gage is a professor of differential geometry in the mathematics department at the University of Rochester. Beginning in 1996, Gage and Prof. Arnold Pizer began development of a web-based system for checking homework and providing immediate feedback for students using the World Wide Web. WeBWorK (http://webwork.maa.org/wiki), developed over 20 years with grants from the NSF, the system is now in active use at over 750 universities, colleges and high schools. In 1999 it won the International Congress on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics (ICTCM) award for excellence and innovation for the use of technology in collegiate mathematics
In 2016 Prof. Gage and Prof. Pizer received the AMS Award for Impact on the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics for the creation and development of WeBWorK, one of the first web-based systems that assigns and grades homework problems in mathematics and science courses (http://www.ams.org/publications/journals/notices/201605/rnoti-p539.pdf).
